Sub-Zero Ice Maker Producing Cloudy, Hollow Cubes: Reading the Shape

Hollow cubes mean less water reached the mould, cloudiness comes from what was dissolved in the supply, and a fused slab points at release timing or a bin nobody empties. Read the cube first, then work back through the stop valve, the filter and the water itself.

The glass gives it away before anyone thinks about the machine. Cubes rattle in thin, vanish in a few minutes, and half of them come out as little cups with a crater where the solid middle should be. Ice is the one thing in a kitchen nobody inspects until the drinks start looking wrong, and by then the appliance has usually been reporting the same problem, in the same way, for months.

Shape, clarity, size: three separate signals

Take one cube out of the bin and read it, because shape, clarity and size are three complaints with three different causes. A dished or hollow cube means less water entered the mould than the cycle expected. Cloudiness is about what was dissolved in that water. A cube that is well formed but simply undersized is a fourth signal again.

Hollow cubes form when a shell freezes against the walls of the mould and there was never enough water behind it to fill the centre. Break one and you often find a thin roof over an empty space. That is a fill story rather than a cooling story: the compartment is doing its job on too little to work with.

Cloudiness comes from air and minerals held in the water coming out of solution as it freezes. The freeze front pushes them ahead of itself toward the middle, which is why a milky cube is usually clear at the edges and white in the core. It tells you about the supply, not about the machine.

A slab — cubes welded into one lump you have to break apart with a spoon — is a release-and-turnover question rather than a freezing one. And a cube with normal shape and normal clarity that is merely small points back at fill volume being slightly down, or at a cycle being cut short.

Marblehead adds a wrinkle to all of this. Plenty of kitchens out on Marblehead Neck belong to houses that stand quiet from November through the spring, and a bin nobody empties for weeks will fuse and shrink no matter how healthy the machine underneath it is. Before reading anything into the ice in a house like that, empty the bin completely and judge the batch that comes after it.

Everything upstream of the appliance

Follow the water backwards before anything inside the cabinet gets blamed. The stop valve, the run of tubing feeding it and whatever the last person to work on the kitchen left behind account for most weak-fill complaints we are called out to, and none of them are faults in the appliance at all.

Start with the shut-off, usually under the sink or in the cabinet alongside. During a remodel it gets closed and then reopened by feel, which frequently means a quarter turn rather than fully open, and a valve that has not moved in fifteen years can seize part-way while still feeling like it is doing something.

Older plumbing around Old Town often carries a saddle valve — the small piercing fitting clamped onto a copper line — and those silt up around the pierce point until they pass a trickle. In Clifton, where kitchens tend to be updated one appliance at a time, a new built-in regularly inherits the tubing that fed the machine before it, complete with the old fitting and every bend it has collected.

That last point matters because the fill is timed rather than measured. The control opens the valve for a set interval and trusts the water to arrive. Reduce the pressure or narrow the path and the same interval delivers less, the mould is short, and what lands in the bin is exactly the dished cube you are holding. The rear ells in Old Town make it worse: shallow cabinets, no room behind the appliance, and a length of tubing folded flat against the wall when the machine was last pushed home.

The filter, and the interval that lapsed

A saturated filter restricts flow long before it changes how anything tastes, so taste is the wrong witness. If the ice went hollow gradually rather than overnight, dating the cartridge is the first useful thing anybody can do, and “it still tastes fine” is not an answer to the question.

Aftermarket cartridges deserve a second look. Housing fit and flow rate through the media are two separate specifications, and a cartridge that clicks into place perfectly can be a restriction from the day it goes in. If the ice changed shortly after a cheaper replacement, that is a strong hint about where to look.

Running the system in bypass is a test rather than a fix. If properly formed cubes come back with the filter path out of circuit, you have proved the restriction sits in that path — you have not proved the cartridge was old, only that it was tight. Put a correct cartridge back in afterwards.

As for how often: intervals differ between series, so read the figure in the use and care guide for the machine you own rather than one quoted for somebody else’s. Whatever it says, a household that gets through a lot of ice reaches it sooner than the calendar suggests.

Hard water, in the parts you cannot see

Dissolved minerals do two jobs. They make the middle of a cube look milky, and they slowly coat every surface the water touches on the way in. The second one catches people out, because it arrives by degrees: the ice is not bad one morning, it is a little worse each month until somebody finally looks properly in the bin.

Deposit builds where water sits, is repeatedly wetted, or evaporates — the outlet of the fill tube, the surface of the mould, and anything the control uses to sense what is going on. A furred mould makes cubes reluctant to let go. A film on a sensing surface changes what the control believes. Neither shows up as a dramatic failure; both show up as ice that has quietly gone wrong.

If there is a softener in the house, find out whether this appliance is fed from the softened side or from a line deliberately left hard. Kitchens are plumbed both ways and the answer changes what the clarity of a cube is telling you. Households across Old Town, Clifton and Salem draw from the same municipal supply rather than private wells, so if a neighbour’s ice looks like yours, the water is the story and the machine is not.

Harvest: making ice and letting go of it

Harvest is the second half of every cycle. Once a batch is frozen, the machine warms the mould just enough to loosen the cubes and then sweeps them out into the bin. Making ice and releasing ice are separate jobs, and a machine can be good at one while quietly failing at the other.

Cubes that land loose and later weld together in the bin are a turnover problem. Cubes arriving already joined into a raft point at timing — a batch not fully released before the next one comes down on top of it. Those are different findings, so watch a batch drop rather than judging what has been sitting in the bin since last month.

What you can observe without tools: whether a cycle runs at all, whether the sweep completes and returns to rest, and whether the sensing arm riding on the level in the bin is halting production with the bin half empty. Some units use an arm and some sense the level another way; either way the behaviour is visible from the front.

Stop at the bin. Do not lever a stuck sweep, do not pour hot water into the mould, and do not open the module. Everything past that point — fill valves, the module and its thermostat, the water line and the drain path on clear-ice units — is Sub-Zero Ice Maker Repair work and needs instruments.

The point where this needs a meter, not another guess

Stop guessing the moment water turns up where it should not. A damp cabinet base, a fitting weeping after a filter change, or a compartment that will not hold its temperature is a call now rather than a weekend project, because a slow leak behind a built-in ruins the floor long before it ruins the ice.

A visit settles what a household cannot: how much water actually reaches the mould inside the fill window, the pressure at the inlet both static and flowing, the timing of the freeze and release phases end to end, and what the control is commanding compared with what the hardware is doing. Those four measurements usually finish the argument in one trip.

Should I throw away the first batch after a filter change?

Yes, and give it more than one batch. Changing a cartridge lets air into the line, and the first fills carry that air along with a little carbon dust from new media, which shows up as cloudy, oddly shaped or off-tasting cubes. Discard a few batches, run the dispenser if the machine has one, and judge the ice only once the line has settled. If cubes are still hollow after that, the change was not the cause.

Is it worth fitting a whole-house softener for this?

Not as a repair. Softening changes what is dissolved in the water, so it can affect how clear a cube looks, but it does nothing about a restricted line, a half-closed stop valve or a tired cartridge — and those are what produce hollow cubes. Treat it as a plumbing decision for the whole house, made on its own merits. If one is already fitted, the useful question is whether this appliance is fed from the softened side.

Are hollow cubes always a water supply problem?

Usually, but not always. A hollow cube says less water reached the mould than the cycle expected; it does not say why. The shortfall can sit anywhere between the stop valve and the fill tube, and it can equally come from the fill valve itself or from a cycle the control cut short. Supply is where to look first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out, not because it is the only answer.
